The ongoing coronavirus threat has resulted in a major worldwide ramp up in these medical research areas. One promising approach for a Covid-19 vaccine candidate is that undertaken by Inovio Pharmaceuticals and Beijing Advaccine Biotechnology. INO-4800 builds on vaccine trials already underway for MERS, a closely related coronavirus. Now in preclinical phases prior to human testing, it takes a “DNA vaccine” approach in sending synthetic genes to the patient’s cells that will potentially boost the immune response.
Another ongoing effort led by Moderna and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases centers on an mRNA technology approach. Scheduled to enter phase I human trials soon, this involves injecting genetic code snippets into the patient’s muscle. This is designed to prod the muscle cells into production of the viral protein, which then spurs the immune system to fight back against the virus.
A third approach involves Sanofi Pasteur and the U.S. Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. Rather than injecting a viral protein into the patient’s body, this approach centers on manufacturing a version of the coronavirus protein. This strategy has already been used successfully to create a flu vaccine, though it is expected to take some time for the drug to reach clinical trial stages.
